Was looking for a new dentist. Latrobe Fanily Dental were recommended to me by a friend. Had my first appointment yesterday. From the moment I walked in, the lovely Amber greeted me at reception. I had the check up done along with xrays with Dr Howard and then a clean with the lovely hygenist Arzoo and her assistant Lucas. A 10/10 experience. The clinic is exceptionally clean, and all the staff were very warm and friendly throughout my visit. Both Dr Howard and Arzoo clearly explained each step, what they were doing and then their findings to me.. ( all good thankfully) I highly recommend giving these guys a go. I know I will definitely be going back in 6mths time for my next check up and clean.Posted on Google![]()

What is Sleep Apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) — where the airway becomes partially or fully blocked while you are asleep, causing the body to briefly rouse itself to restart breathing.
These interruptions can happen dozens, sometimes hundreds of times per night. Most people have no idea it is happening. In many cases, it is a partner or family member who first notices the loud snoring, choking sounds, or alarming pauses in breathing.
Sleep apnoea is not just a snoring problem. It affects how well you breathe, how deeply you sleep, and how that ripples through every part of your health and daily life. Left untreated, it can have serious consequences, which is why early assessment matters.
Sleep Apnoea Treatment Can Help Improve Sleep and Daily Function
Patients often seek help because they feel constantly tired, wake up unrefreshed, or are told they snore heavily. Others notice headaches in the morning, daytime fatigue, dry mouth on waking, or difficulty concentrating through the day.
When sleep is repeatedly interrupted, even without fully waking each time, the body may not get the quality rest it needs. That is why proper assessment matters. If sleep apnoea is involved, the right treatment may help improve not only your nights, but also how you feel during the day.
What Are Some Signs You May Need Sleep Apnoea Treatment?
Many people live with sleep apnoea symptoms for years without connecting the dots. If any of the following sound familiar, it is worth having a conversation with our team:
- Loud or persistent snoring every night
- Choking, gasping, or pauses in breathing during sleep
- Waking suddenly throughout the night
- Waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
- Morning headaches that seem to have no clear cause
- Feeling completely unrefreshed after a full night’s sleep
- Ongoing daytime fatigue and low energy
- Difficulty concentrating or poor memory
- Mood changes and irritability linked to poor sleep
- Restless, broken sleep night after night
These symptoms do not automatically confirm sleep apnoea, but if they are persistent and affecting your quality of life, they are absolutely worth discussing. The sooner the cause is identified, the sooner you can start sleeping and living better.
Why Sleep Apnoea Should Not Be Ignored?
Many people assume snoring is only a nuisance, but when breathing is being interrupted through the night, the problem may be more significant than it seems. If sleep apnoea is left unaddressed, it may continue to affect sleep quality, energy levels, and daily functioning.
That is why it is important not to dismiss the symptoms, especially if they are persistent. Early assessment can help clarify whether the issue is simple snoring, a sleep-related breathing problem, or something that needs a more structured treatment approach.

What are the Benefits of Getting Sleep Apnoea Treatment in Traralgon at Latrobe Family Dental?
Sleep apnoea treatment can do more than help with snoring. It may help improve sleep quality, support easier breathing at night, and reduce the impact poor sleep has on everyday life.
(* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.)
Help Improve Sleep Quality
When breathing is better supported during sleep, many patients hope to achieve more settled and restful sleep through the night.
Reduce Daytime Tiredness and Poor Concentration
Poor sleep often shows up during the day as fatigue, low energy, or difficulty focusing. Treatment may help reduce those ongoing effects.
Support a More Comfortable Night for You and Your Partner
For patients with heavy snoring or disrupted sleep, treatment may help make nights more comfortable not only for the patient, but also for the people sleeping nearby.
What Dental Treatment May Help with Sleep Apnoea?
For suitable patients, a dental sleep appliance may be recommended. This custom-fitted device is worn during sleep and works by gently repositioning the lower jaw to help keep the airway open and reduce obstruction.
Dental sleep appliances are:
- Custom-madeto fit your teeth precisely for comfort
- Silent and portable— no machines, no masks, no power required
- A clinically recognised treatment option for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea
- A practical alternative for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy
Every patient is different, which is why proper assessment always comes first. Our dentists will evaluate whether a dental appliance is appropriate for your specific situation. If a formal diagnosis has not yet been confirmed, further investigation or referral to a sleep specialist may also be recommended as part of the process.
How Does Sleep Apnoea Treatment Work at Latrobe Family Dental?
Getting started is simple. Here is what to expect:
Step 1. Symptom Discussion
Your dentist will take time to understand your symptoms in detail — snoring patterns, sleep disturbances, morning tiredness, and any concerns raised by your partner or family. No rush, no judgement.
Step 2. Assessment
We assess your oral health, jaw structure, airway, and overall suitability for a dental sleep appliance. If further investigation or specialist referral is needed to confirm a diagnosis, we will guide you through that process clearly.
Step 3. Treatment and Next Steps
If a dental treatment option is appropriate, your dentist will explain the recommended approach in full — what it involves, what to expect, and what happens next. Every decision is yours, made at your own pace, with complete information.
What About Snoring Without Diagnosed Sleep Apnoea?
You do not need a confirmed sleep apnoea diagnosis to seek help. Many of our Traralgon patients come to us simply because of heavy snoring without having had a formal sleep study.
Snoring is always worth assessing when it is frequent, loud, or affecting the quality of sleep for anyone in the household. Our team will help you understand whether what you are experiencing is straightforward snoring or something that warrants a deeper look, and advise the most appropriate pathway either way.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnoea Treatment
What is the difference between snoring and sleep apnoea?
Snoring is the sound produced by vibrating airway tissue. Sleep apnoea involves actual pauses in breathing, the airway partially or fully closes, forcing the body to briefly wake to restart breathing. Both are worth assessing, but sleep apnoea carries more significant health risks.
Do I need a sleep study first?
Not necessarily. Our dentists can assess your symptoms and suitability for a dental sleep appliance at your first appointment. However, if sleep apnoea has not been formally diagnosed, we may recommend a sleep study or referral to a sleep physician, particularly for more complex or severe cases.
What is a dental sleep appliance and how does it work?
It is a custom-made mouthguard-style device worn during sleep. It gently repositions the lower jaw slightly forward to help keep the airway open and prevent obstruction. It is quiet, portable, and far less intrusive than a CPAP machine.
Is it comfortable to wear?
Most patients adapt within a few nights. Because the appliance is custom-fitted to your teeth, it is designed to be as comfortable as possible. Some mild initial adjustment is completely normal.
Can a dental appliance replace a CPAP machine?
For mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, a dental appliance can be a suitable alternative to CPAP, particularly for patients who find the machine difficult to tolerate. For severe cases, CPAP typically remains the primary recommendation. Our team will advise you honestly on what is appropriate for your situation.
Does private health insurance cover dental sleep appliances?
Some extras cover policies with orthodontic or dental appliance benefits may contribute toward the cost. We accept all health funds through HICAPS and can check your entitlements on the spot.
Can treatment help with my morning headaches?
Morning headaches are a recognised symptom of sleep apnoea, caused by reduced oxygen levels through the night. Where sleep apnoea is the underlying cause, effective treatment may help reduce or resolve them.
How do I get started?
