What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?
Dental crowns and bridges are a wonderful restorative solution for damaged or missing teeth. Using carefully crafted prosthetics, our experienced dentists work to restore your smile in a way that looks and feels completely natural. Traditionally, metal alloys or gold were used for dental crowns, but thankfully there are now many more aesthetic and natural looking options available right here at Latrobe Family Dental.
We offer beautiful porcelain tooth crowns that not only function just like your original teeth but also blend seamlessly with your natural smile. They are a perfect solution for teeth that are damaged, severely decayed, or simply in need of some extra protection, and we think you will absolutely love the results.
When Might You Need a Dental Crown?
There are a few common situations where a dental crown may be the right solution for you. Here are three of the most typical scenarios our team sees:
1. When Decay Is Limited to the Visible Portion of the Tooth Above the Gum Line
In some cases, a tooth coloured filling alone may not be enough to fully address the decay. When a crown is used alongside or instead of a filling, it covers the tooth entirely, providing a much stronger and more durable result. A dental crown fortifies the tooth and significantly extends its life, which is a great outcome for your long term oral health.
2. When Decay Has Spread to the Root
When decay reaches the root of the tooth, our caring cosmetic dentists will need to perform endodontic treatment to remove it. Endodontics plays an important role in preserving the tooth as well as the surrounding jaw bone and neighbouring teeth, helping to protect your overall oral health and keep as much of your natural smile intact as possible.
3. When a Tooth Is Missing Completely
If a tooth is missing entirely, an artificial root can be placed using a dental implant post. A porcelain crown is then attached to the implant to create a natural looking and fully functional new tooth. It is a wonderful solution that restores both the appearance and function of your smile beautifully.

What Does a Dental Crown Actually Do?
A dental crown is a carefully crafted tooth replacement that is custom made to match the texture, colour, and size of your natural teeth. It is permanently fixed over your existing tooth to give it a fresh, strong, and natural looking surface. Dental crowns can be placed over any tooth and are a wonderful solution for teeth with large old metal fillings that may be putting the tooth at risk of cracking. These old metal fillings can be replaced with beautiful porcelain crowns that provide the tooth with greater longevity and strength, all while looking completely natural.
How Does a Dental Bridge Work?
A dental bridge works in a similar way to a crown, but instead of standing alone, it receives support from the teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges are most commonly used to treat multiple missing or severely damaged teeth using a single prosthetic solution. They are crafted from the same high quality materials as crowns and offer a completely natural look and feel that blends beautifully with the rest of your smile.
Dental Crown Journey at Latrobe Family Dental
Once you have consulted with our caring dentists and decided that a dental crown is the right solution for you, the process at Latrobe Family Dental typically involves two comfortable visits.
First Visit
Our caring cosmetic dentists at Latrobe Family Dental will make sure you feel completely at ease from the moment you sit down. To begin, the area to be treated will be gently numbed so you are comfortable throughout. Your dentist will then clean the outer surface of the tooth and carefully remove any damaged, decayed tissue and debris. The tooth is then reshaped and resized so it best supports the crown.
A mould or impression of the tooth is taken and sent to our laboratory, where your custom porcelain crown is carefully crafted to match the exact thickness of the layer that was removed. The shade of the porcelain is also thoughtfully selected to match the colour of your natural teeth so everything looks beautifully seamless.
In the meantime, your dentist will place a temporary plastic crown over your reshaped tooth to protect it and keep you comfortable. They will also walk you through how to care for your temporary crown at home so you feel confident between visits.
Second Visit
When you come back for your second visit, you will again be seated comfortably and the treatment area will be gently numbed. Your dentist will carefully remove the temporary crown and thoroughly examine your new permanent crown to make sure it fits and functions perfectly. A dental crown should never cause any discomfort when your upper and lower teeth come together, so if any adjustments are needed, your dentist will take care of them before anything is finalised.
Once you and your dentist are happy with how everything looks and feels, the crown is permanently cemented into place. And just like that, you will have a strong, natural looking new tooth that you can smile about.
With good oral hygiene habits like regular brushing and flossing, your porcelain crown can last around ten years, and some patients have kept theirs for up to thirty years. It is a long lasting investment in your smile that is absolutely worth it.
