Why Early Orthodontic Treatment Matters

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that diagnoses, prevents, and treats problems related to the alignment of teeth and jaws.
Early orthodontics focuses on identifying concerns within a child’s developing mouth and addressing them before they grow into more serious dental issues. By stepping in at the right time, we can support the healthy development of your child’s teeth and jaw in a way that simply would not be possible later in life. Because children’s bones are still growing and more easily guided, bite problems and alignment concerns can often be treated more quickly and effectively at a young age.

What Our Customers Say

We are proud to care for families across Traralgon and the Latrobe Valley, and we truly value the feedback our patients share.

Early Detection &Treatment with Orthodontic Appliances

Our experienced orthodontists at Latrobe Family Dental have a keen eye for detecting problems in the development of children’s teeth, mouth, and jaw. Identifying these concerns early makes a real difference. It means issues can be addressed more quickly, lengthy treatment down the track can often be avoided, and your child is less likely to face complications or the need for surgery in the future.

There are several safe and effective orthodontic appliances available for children that can help correct bite and alignment issues. Following your child’s consultation, our dentist will recommend the most suitable appliance based on your child’s specific needs and condition.

And if your child does not require immediate treatment, there is no need to worry. Our dentist will keep a close eye on the development of their mouth and jaw, monitoring their progress carefully to make sure everything is tracking in the right direction and catching any concerns early if they do arise.

How Soon Can a Child Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Every child develops at their own pace, so there is no one size fits all answer when it comes to the right age for orthodontic treatment. As a general guide, our dentists recommend waiting until your child begins getting their permanent teeth. For most children, this happens somewhere between the ages of 7 and 12, and it is often during this stage that early orthodontic assessment and treatment can make the biggest difference.

What Are the Advantages of Early Orthodontics in Traralgon

At Latrobe Family Dental, we take a thoughtful and personalised approach to your child’s orthodontic care, carefully planning treatment to align with the natural growth of their jaw. Because children’s jawbones are still soft and malleable, issues can be corrected at an early age far more easily, creating the right conditions for healthy jaw and teeth development as they grow.

Early treatment also plays an important role in preventing future dental complications, including concerns that could eventually lead to tooth extractions or other dental disorders. By comparison, adults have much firmer jaw structures that are not as easily guided, which is why orthodontic treatment in adulthood generally takes longer and may sometimes require the removal of permanent teeth to achieve the desired result.

Orthodontic Appliances Used in Early Treatment

Every child’s orthodontic needs are different, so the appliance recommended for your child will depend on their specific condition. Following a thorough assessment, our orthodontist will suggest the most appropriate appliance to achieve the best possible outcome. Some of the appliances our team uses in early orthodontic treatment include:

(* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.)

Braces

Depending on the level of care required, children may need to wear braces for anywhere between one and three years. Today there are many modern options available, including mini braces, ceramic braces, and self-ligating braces, all of which are designed to be comfortable for children to wear. In some cases, traditional metal braces may also be recommended depending on your child’s condition. Once the braces are removed, children will often need to wear retainers to maintain the corrected position of their teeth and jaw.

It is worth noting that Invisalign has also been producing great results for many younger patients. The aligners are easy to manage and considerably more comfortable than traditional braces. Talk to our caring team today to find out which option is the best fit for your child.

Palatal Expander

Children with crowded teeth are commonly treated using a palatal expander. This appliance works by gradually widening the roof of the mouth, creating more space for the teeth to grow and develop properly. The expander is fitted using an expansion screw and two pieces of plastic that are carefully fixed to both sides of the molars on the upper jaw. As the expansion screw is turned, gentle pressure is applied to slowly push the two sides apart, widening the jaw over time. Achieving the right arch size helps ensure that adult teeth come through in a healthier, better aligned position.

Space Maintainers

When a child loses a tooth prematurely due to decay or an injury, the neighbouring teeth can gradually drift into the empty space. A space maintainer is used to keep that space open until the permanent tooth is ready to come through in its natural position. Space maintainers can take the form of a band fixed to the empty space or a temporary crown, and they are removed once the permanent tooth begins to emerge.
